About Old Tacoma Cemetery: The Living and the Dead

Old Tacoma Cemetery: The Living and the Dead

The Victorian era was a particularly romantic time to die. The prevalence of deaths from diseases, war, and lack of effective medical treatments led to a morbid fascination with mortality, and a growing interest in spiritualism and seances. Cemetaries were designed to be so beautiful as to make the deceased content to stay there forever, instead of getting restless and leaving to haunt their friends and family.

Old Tacoma Cemetery is a perfect example of this 19th century trend. Opened in 1875 and spanning 42 acres, this final resting place for generations of Tacomans feels closer to a charming Victorian garden than a gloomy graveyard. Artist and nature enthusiast Raine Rath takes a closer look at the thriving flora and fauna of Old Tacoma Cemetery (such as birds, insects, fungi, and flowers) as well as the spooky histories of the humans long dead there...including those who refuse to stay buried!

Raine Rath is a Tacoma artist, designer, and Pacific Northwest native who has been birding and studying nature for decades. She has a degree in journalism and studio art from the University of Oregon and works as an art director and designer in book publishing. Raine's experience working with the Washington State Historical Society ignited her love for Tacoma's history.
