About Beer: A Global History

Beer: A Global History

Beer has been part of the human experience since the dawn of civilization. Historian Sean Munger covers some of the highlights of this long history, including brewing in Roman and medieval times, the role of beer in the German American immigrant experience, and how the Willamette and Yakima valleys in Oregon and Washington became important centers for the hops industry and modern 21st century craft beer culture.

Sean Munger has a Ph.D. in American environmental history from the University of Oregon and has lectured, published non-fiction and novels, and taught history for 18 years. He is known for his deep dive historical presentations on YouTube. A former attorney, Dr. Munger now teaches history online and in person to students of all ages.

These events are open to everyone interested in Pacific Northwest history, and beyond! Often co-sponsored by local or state historical and civic organizations, we bring you experts, scholars, first-person experiencers, historians and documentaries expounding on topics from indigenous history to the birth of Portland, early explorers to hop growing, and on and on! It's like being back in the classroom - except this time you get to settle into comfortable seats and enjoy a drink or two with dinner while you listen and learn.
