Caught Dead Handed
Caught Dead Handed is an intergenerational Grateful Dead tribute band
from Portland and Salem, Oregon. Founded in 2024, the group's members range in
age from 24 to 70. Its youngest member, lead guitarist Daniel Stumpf, an L.A.
transplant who came to Portland for college in 2019, assembled the band.
While in school, he met Sam
Brewer, a graduating senior and rhythm guitarist with a strange affinity for
the guitar style of Bob Weir. Then came COVID which meant Daniel's college
years were spent mostly in isolation, studying and playing his guitar. His
passion for Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead is unquestionable; so upon
graduating college he decided to pursue his dream and began searching for
musicians to form this band. He connected with Ron Rocci, Brian Straus, and
Stevie Vee, all lifelong Deadheads with established connections to the local
music scene.
Ron's experience provides a
solid foundation and his drum solos are like a symphony. Stevie's positive
& laid back attitude is infectious and his Pigpen rants are full of soul.
Brian's bass is funky and in-the-pocket, holding the band together and driving
it forward. Keyboardist and vocalist Summer Tupelo recently moved from
Virginia and immediately sought a new Dead band to play with. Like Keith and
Donna all rolled into one, she's all about the improvisation, and letting the
music guide the band.
Caught Dead Handed combines veteran experience with young talent and
performs faithful renditions of your favorite Dead tunes. Heartfelt jams, tight
transitions, and powerful energy, make for dance-worthy shows that are not to
be missed.
