Oregon has 13 downhill ski areas but there were once many more. Join us as Steven Stenkamp chronicles the history of lost and forgotten alpine ski areas, including Taft Mountain, Idlewild, Oregon Trail, Tomahawk, Santiam Lodge, and many others.
Steven Stenkamp is a longtime Bend resident, retired firefighter and teacher, and former mayor of Bend. He is the creator of "Lost Ski Areas of Oregon" on Facebook and has downhill skied for 60 seasons. Stenkamp has been interviewed by OPB and various news outlets for his research on Oregon's ski history.

These events are open to everyone interested in Pacific Northwest history, and beyond! Often co-sponsored by local or state historical and civic organizations, we bring you experts, scholars, first-person experiencers, historians and documentaries expounding on topics from indigenous history to the birth of Portland, early explorers to hop growing, and on and on! It's like being back in the classroom - except this time you get to settle into comfortable seats and enjoy a drink or two with dinner while you listen and learn.
This event is eligible for a History Pub Stamp
