OMSI Science Pub: Symbiosis in the Soil

Science Pubs are a casual lecture series held in two locations across Portland. Grab a drink and get comfy as you learn about mycorrhizae and the symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi with Symbiosis in the Soil.

About the lecture:

Mutually beneficial mycorrhizal relations between (mushroom) mycelium and plant roots date back to the oldest plant fossil with roots. In the eons since, this relationship has supported plant evolution through the exchange of nutrients and other support provided by the fungus. The result is multiple types of mycorrhizal relationships found with 95% of all plants in the world - whether between our beloved Chanterelles and their coniferous partners, or as we find with more cryptic relationships in underground orchids and tundra-loving shrubs. In this talk, Peter will explain the importance and functions of the major types of mycorrhizal fungi - from their evolutionary history, to their impacts on the natural and man-made world today, to how you can support these important species in the forest or garden.

Peter McCoy is a mycology researcher and educator who has studied and shared the world of fungi with others for over twenty years. He is the author of Radical Mycology and The Mycocultural Revolution, the founder of the mycology advocacy organization Radical Mycology, the Fungi Film Festival, and the founder and lead instructor at Mycologos - an applied mycology school and experimental fungi farm based in Portland, Oregon.
