About OMSI Science Pub: What Causes a Cold Snap?
Science Pubs are a casual lecture series held in two locations across
Portland. Grab a drink and get comfy as you learn about cold weather climate
science in What Causes A Cold Snap?
About the lecture:
Extreme winter cold snaps can bring a range of hazards and disruptions. Why
do these extreme weather events occur and how are they changing? Come learn
about the meteorological anatomy of an extreme cold snap in the Pacific
Northwest and how it differs from other parts of the United States. We'll also
look at how the frequency and severity of cold snaps are changing and are
expected to change in the future.
Dr. Paul Loikith is an Associate Professor of weather and
climate science in the Portland State Geography Department. He is the director
of the Portland State Climate Science Lab and the interim director of the
Portland State Institute for Sustainable Solutions. Dr. Loikith holds a PhD in
Atmospheric Science from Rutgers University and has research interests that
focus on the atmospheric drivers of weather and climate extremes across the
western US.
