About Celebration of our Induction into the National Register of Historic Places

Celebration of our Induction into the National Register of Historic Places

First added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, Crystal Hotel's nomination was recently renewed, adding an LGBTQ+ designation in recognition of its cultural significance in Portland's LGBTQ+ community between the late ‘60s and mid ‘80s.
In celebration of our induction and new LGBTQ+ historical site designation, we're throwing a ceremony in Pride Plaza! Join us for an induction ceremony and check out the unveiling our new National Register of History Places plaque. After the ceremony, grab a table on the patio and enjoy a hearty brunch while Poison Waters and Friends entertain!

About About Crystal Hotel's Nomination

About Crystal Hotel's Nomination

Crystal Hotel was initially nominated and listed under the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 for its significance in commerce and community development. Fifteen years later and through the hard work of the LBGTQ+ Historic Sites Project, this nomination was amended to recognize the building's historical significance to the LGBTQ+ community between 1969 and 1985. During this era, the Crystal was an integral part of the Gay Triangle - the heart of the city's queer scene - as The Majestic Hotel and Club Baths in the ‘70s and Club Portland in the ‘80s. The property was a safe haven for Portland's queer community during a time when many felt they had to hide their true selves in fear of their lives. This new designation in our listing not only highlights our personal ties to Portland's LGBTQ+ community, but the importance of uncovering and documenting LGBTQ+ stories nationwide.
