STRANGLED DARLINGS
Imagine Tom Waits and Jack White drinking in a Romani dive bar, then haphazardly mixing DNA. That miracle baby might resemble PDX art-folk trio Strangled Darlings. Using an arsenal of old-time instruments—mandolin, accordion, violin and more—the group wades through a spooky realm of melting-pot Americana that resembles Waits' music, minus the Cookie Monster growl. George Veech's high-register voice lends a harried madness to the music, smoothed out by Amy Spreadborough and Jessica Anderly's powerful siren songs.
One concert-goer described Strangled Darlings's performance: "They look like they stepped out of a Jules Verne novel on the way to a vaudeville funeral."

VIRGINIA COHEN
As all songwriters, Virginia Cohen draws inspiration from many places, including visual artists like Rothko, Chagall, Kathe Kollwitz and Ansel Adams, and writers such as Rachel Carson, Rumi, Rilke and Mary Oliver. A love of history and the natural world also influences her music, as does a desire to express beauty and truth in the face of chaos and insanity.
