About Kickoff of the 4th Annual Slabtown Festival
Portland Punk in Slabtown, 1978-79
Presented by Mark Sten, author of forthcoming book, PORTLAND PUNK, 1977-1981, and Mike Lastra, filmmaker, director/producer of the 2007 documentary, "Northwest Passage: The Birth of Portland's DIY Culture"
Northwest Portland's roiling, torrid Punk scene of the late 1970s will be explored, especially at the Earth Tavern, the Long Goodbye, and other key neighborhood hubs. Music historian Mark Sten will chronicle the scene with a lecture that spotlights local bands, The Wipers and Neo Boys, as well as pivotal individuals, Roz Rezabek, John Shirley and Fred Cole.
Sten's presentation will be illustrated with slides and never-before-seen vintage footage of the Dead Kennedys and The Neo Boys performing in Northwest Portland. Next, Mike Lastra's groundbreaking documentary film, Northwest Passage: The Birth of Portland's DIY Culture, will be screened, with an introduction by Lastra. Following the movie, there will be a Q & A session with the filmmaker.
A $3 suggested donation to the filmmaker will be welcomed from those staying to watch Northwest Passage.
