About Whiskey Puppy
The bluegrass / old-time / Americana trio Whiskey Puppy has been messing the floor of accommodating venues around Portland, OR since 2000. Whiskey Puppy strives to preserve traditional bluegrass and old-time music, specializing in finding the obscure old songs that few dare to cover. With over five years as a band, Whiskey Puppy's broad repertoire includes jug band music of the early 1900's, old-timey tunes, songs of the Southern string bands of the 1930s, and bluegrass old and new. The band is known for high-energy performances, ridiculous stage banter, and their collection of booze-flavored chew toys.
In 2004, Whiskey Puppy performed at Tillamook OR's MooGrass Festival, in Ridgefield WA's Birds and Bluegrass Festival, and won the "Not quite bluegrass" band contest at the Columbia Gorge Bluegrass Festival. They performed to high acclaim at the 2005 and 2006 San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festivals and at the 2006 Not Your Daddy's Grass Festival.
In July 2005, Whiskey Puppy went on their first-ever cross-country tour to promote the release of the third Whiskey Puppy album: "Fate of Man (before the dawn of pants)"! What a busy puppy!
In spring 2006, the National Traditional Country Music Association Magazine wrote: "You would have a hard time distinguishing between this group, and any of the early 1920's or 30's string bands that were so incredibly popular. Do puppies really drink whiskey?" and in spring 2005 they wrote: "Whiskey Puppy ... is on the cutting edge of incredible energy music ... They have maintained the sound of the Skillet Lickers and have as much fun as the old-timers did."
Bluegrass Unlimited said: "Make no mistake about it, the music of Whiskey Puppy has a raucous edge that straddles the line between old-time and bluegrass music." (Oct. 2003) "Whiskey Puppy [has] combed the archives of American music and found some intriguing material that time has practically forgotten." (BU, Feb. 2006)
Whiskey Puppy is Rachel Gold (guitar), Justin Auld (banjo) and Travis Harrison (bass). You have to hear it to believe it!
