About Mars Retrieval Unit
MRU has been lighting up the Portland and surrounding jam and groove circuit with its unique blend of prog rock and groove. Lead singer and saxophonologist Chelsea has total freedom for her vocal and instrumental melodies to float above the churning, relentless rhythm section of Joel and Murray, darting in and out of Rob and Joshua's web of guitar and synthesizer.
Drawing influences from such diverse acts as Herbie Hancock to Pink Floyd, Parliament-Funkadelic to Rush, Yes, Frank Zappa, Phish, Steely Dan, and Talking Heads (to name a few), their original music has more of a composed feel than a "song" vibe, while the band maintains the looseness of improvisation and the desire to explore the structure of the songs.
In 2009 MRU headlined numerous summer festivals to the delight of thousands. In the spare time between those performances, he band is finalizing its debut studio recording for release in late fall of 2009.
