Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart and his band The Grogs tour through the Crystal in support of Banhart's current album What Will We Be, released by Reprise Records on October 2009.
The touring line-up is guitarist Noah Georgeson (who produced Banhart's previous two albums), guitarist Rodrigo Amarante, drummer Greg Rogove, and bassist Luckey Remington.
A December show at London's Shepherd's bush Empire led one British critic to rave that "he's still every inch the rock star, brandishing his guitar like a weapon...and dancing with appropriately reckless abandon. He's a beguiling star indeed, swinging his hips like Plant and switching from croon to mercurial yelp as the energy begins to swell within the crowd beneath his feet."
Critics have equally praised What Will We Be, which Rolling Stone has called "the best [Banhart's] ever made," and The Onion praised as "his most elegantly driven work yet." The New York Times called Banhart a "knowing throwback to California psychedelia and Brazilian tropicalia, and so skillful that nothing seems too studied," while Entertainment Weekly found the singer "more energized than ever."
Banhart has also been busy working with other artists, having remixed songs for Oasis, Phoenix, and Liars. He was also part of the Leonard Cohen edition of Beck's Record Club, which also featured Beck, MGMT, and Wolfmother.
