About Hal's Café

Join us for brunch, dinner or happy hour in this kitchen-centered space where chefs deftly bridge the expanse between comfort food and sophisticated dining with Benedicts and brioche French toast, ahi steak, Electric Seoul kalbi short ribs, wood-fired pizzas and plenty more delicious bites and entrees. Stop in for an old favorite or a new culinary experience in this bistro where music is set in stained glass and art depicts history.

The eponymous Hal’s Café opened in 2011 as Zeus Café, a downtown eatery tucked into the confluence of Portland’s Pearl District and Pride Plaza. In 2023 we renamed the café for our beloved Hal Finkelstein, Zeus’s orchestrator-in-chief until his passing in 2022.

Heated seating is available outside, where pets are welcome to accompany diners.

If you visit at just the right time of day, as the sun streams through the transom windows along Harvey Milk Street, you’ll catch – for a moment – the notes of the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” playing out in light across the floor of Hal’s Café.
