About Hillsdale Brewery & Public House

A part of Pacific Northwest microbrewing history

You'd never guess that this humble spot in Southwest Portland is full of beer history. Upon opening -- February 8, 1984 -- it was McMenamins’ third location, following closely behind the Barley Mill and the Greenway pubs. A year later the Oregon legislature passed a brewpub law allowing beer to be made and sold within one property. McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery was fired up, and in October 1985, became Oregon’s first brewpub since Prohibition and birthplace of several of our classic beers: Hammerhead, Ruby and Terminator.

Come by and see the original brew sheet from our first brew. Then belly up to the bar to chat with the bartender, and see what’s cooking. Or have a seat on the patio.

We raise a pint to you, Hillsdale Brewery & Public House. You're a true original.

Hillsdale Brewery & Public House allows pets at our front patio only.

History

"Blackberry beer — blackberry beer?” By now I was sputtering. “Who would drink the stuff?”

It was September 1985 and I was shouting at Mike McMenamin, proprietor and owner, with brother Brian, of Oregon's first brew pub, the Hillsdale Brewery and Public House. Mike was plotting which beers he might make in the newly installed stainless steel fermenting vats which, along with the beautiful copper kettle and cooling tubes constituted the modestly priced brewing plant.

This is how our friend Fred Eckardt so perfectly described the outset of our adventures at Captain Neon's Fermentation Chamber (as the Hillsdale's brewing facility was christened). Read more to find out if he was right.
