About Healing the Big River: Salmon Dreams and the Columbia River Treaty

Healing the Big River: Salmon Dreams and the Columbia River Treaty

Take a visual journey to the origins of the Columbia River, from its source as a tiny spring in the Canadian Rockies to the Pacific Ocean. Photographer Peter Marbach shares stories from his 12-year project documenting all 1,250 miles of the mighty river. Learn about the complicated history of the Columbia River Treaty, its impact on First Nations and Indigenous communities, and the ongoing efforts to restore one of the world's greatest salmon runs, from the sea to its source in British Columbia.

Peter Marbach is an author and photographer with three decades of experience capturing Oregon's most beautiful landscapes. His work addresses important environmental and Indigenous justice issues and has been featured in National Geographic, Oregon Field Guide, and more.

Marbach's photo essay book, Healing the Big River: Salmon Dreams and the Columbia River Treaty includes guest essays by First Nations leaders, tribal members, and salmon restoration advocates about their connection to the river and efforts to re-negotiate for a modernized treaty that honors Indigenous knowledge and the natural environment.
